I'm a bit struggling with Slackware though (mainly downloading and
installing the right packages. It's been more than 15 years since I last
used it but it doesn't seem to have changed much. ;)

I used this to build all the different packages to install:
http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.0/system/nss-pam-ldapd/
Hopefully you'll only need the client side. In all my testing I never
touched the server side.

Nope... lets see, 15 years.. thats about three versions of slack :-)
