It originally stood for "Name Service LDAP Connection Daemon"
(see the --help output) but since the PAM and other functionality was
added is not really a good description any more.
Btw, nslcd doesn't do any caching (except for some group member
lookups). The 0.9 version of pynslcd does have some code for caching but
it isn't well tested yet and disabled by default.
