nslcd is supposed to do a simple bind if you only have binddn and
bindpw specified. The PAM authentication check does call
ldap_sasl_bind() because password policy controls are requested but
passing LDAP_SASL_SIMPLE so it should result in a simple bind.
Can you be more specific in what problems you are seeing with which
configurations and which versions?
