I also use nss-pam-ldapd in a network where there are legacy users with 
uids below 1000. This should fix that (assuming 100 is the new minimum):

sed -i 's/minimum_uid=1000/minimum_uid=100/' /etc/pam.d/common-*

This is correctly preserved through upgrade.
