I fixed this (I think) by removing my ssh known_hosts file.

What would be helpful in debugging this is the logs from the PAM stack
and from nslcd. You can specify a loglevel of debug in nslcd.conf to
get more detailed information but with a timeout I would expect an
error to be logged.
