Well it appears to have started working as expected, although I'm not
sure what I've fiddled with that's kicked it into life. It may have been
a reboot that did it. I've turned on debugging and will continue to
monitor it's behavior. nscd is a lot of help, although I feel
uncomfortable with it hiding some of the problems.

Out of interest, what software/appliance have you been using for your L4
switching?
