best practices for deploying nss-pam-ldapd

Hi all,

I have this persistent and annoying problem that many times after applying 
patches and updates to my CentOS 4/5/6 systems via "yum update"  it causes 
nss/pam/ldap to be totally broken and I have to reinstall nss-pam-ldapd again.
Why?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
