Yes, AD is the backend.

Your recommendation was right on:

map passwd homeDirectory "/home/$sAMAccountName"

That is the incantation that got me where I wanted to be. I thought I'd tried it but my list of prior failures indicates otherwise :)

Is there an uid attribute containing username? If it's AD try $sAMAccountName

If you have access to LDAP logs you can easily check what attributes are requested by searches from nslcd. Or you can run nslcd in debug mode - it's there too.

In the comments of that paste are various attempts at mapping the home directory, each with the result it produced.

Currently my user looks like this:

# getent passwd cmarget

cmarget:*:1407:1407:Chris Marget:/home/:/bin/bash

Any idea why $uid isn't expanding to 'cmarget'? That seems to be the popular way of mapping the home directory to the username.
