Just so I know what awaits me - could you give me examples of which services will break if I set bind_policy to soft?
Using Debian stable, I haven't found any. I have my bind_policy set to soft on all systems and nscd installed. The system spews a few lines on start about not being able to bind to the ldap server and moves on immediately. After boot everything just works.
